january, february & march 2010.

throughout the first few months of 2010, foundations.(au) began to care for a group of orphaned and vulnerable children from the Kabale district. each of these children have a story who will break your heart, each of these children deserved the right to be safe, healthy, loved and educated. as part of the set up of our place, foundations.(au) also hired several staff members for the home, including a wonderful house 'grandmother', and a warm and skilled counsellor.  all of the children were enrolled in school, for some of these children it was the first time they had an opportunity to attend school.

april & may 2010.

you just never know who you might bump into when you sit down to take five in Uganda!  on my most recent trip back to Kabale I met Ineke van der Hout, an energetic and life loving dutch born painter who now calls Alice Springs home.  Ineke's spirit and sense of adventure is contagious and inspiring.  we all thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent with her in Kabale.  after visiting our children's home in town and learning about the children we care for Ineke offered to paint a mural in the living room entitled, 'celebration of life'. everytime you walk into the room you cannot wipe the smile off your face, this painting really dose warm your heart. we all feel so proud that we have one of Ineke's paintings in our home and we thank her for the compassion and creativity she shared with us.

august 2010.
we had a very important visit to our place in August, several district officers from the children's welfare office. the officers were blown away by the standards of care at our place, the level of hygiene, focus on education and the 'time out' cushion.  they explained that we were the only organisation in the entire district which met the National quality standard for the protection, care and support of orphaned and vunerlabe children in Uganda. what an achievement!

october & november 2010.

  • a very important milestone was reached for one of the children in our care, Fred. december 2010.
  • school's out! all the children at our place did exceptionally well at school. for some it was their first opportunity to attend school, for others it was the chance to return after years of living on the street. we asked the children what they would like to do during their school holidays, all requesting a tutor!
  • Christmas was celebrated at our place, all the children spent time making craft items which represented Christmas to them and which could be used to decorate the house, making gifts for each other and signing and dancing. cultural traditions were adhered to on Christmas day. to read more about Christmas in Uganda check out the second edition of our newsletter.
