learning landscape - what a success!

posted 15 Nov 2011 18:43 by Rosie O'Halloran

a quick note from volunteer Lisa Becker who is currently in Uganda, running workshops with the teaching staff and students at Kagunga primary school on how to make the most out of the learning landscapes.

"what a success!!!! day two of the workshops was really, really brilliant and despite me forgetting about the non-existence of the internet in Kahondo, which meant I couldn’t show the teachers the videos on the learning landscape website, we still had a great day. The teachers have already started varying the games were taught them in the first workshop, bending and adding rules, and combining elements of the two games! It was really great to see that and I encouraged them to keep doing that by pointing out how that they can adapt the games to their specific lessons.

I started with asking every teacher how their week was and whether had played any games. I was very happy to find that most of them had in fact been playing the educational games with the students. the problems they faced included large class sizes and limited class time. we discussed some ideas of how they could better used the time and space and talked about diving the classes into two groups.

I introduced them to two more games: foxes and rabbits and shuffle. we altered foxes and rabbits into lions and antelopes so the animals were more familiar to them. both games went down quite well, first having a practice in the classroom. once we were out to the tyres their engagement was magical! I was blown away by how much they were into the games!"

learning landscape.

posted 3 Nov 2011 17:32 by Rosie O'Halloran   [ updated 4 Nov 2011 22:52 ]

the schooling system in Uganda is based on rote learning and does not leave much room for creative thinking or outdoor play. this is sometimes due to a lack of resources in schools and undeveloped skills of teachers. an American based not for profit group 'Project H' developed the 'learning landscape' to solve this problem and has inspired groups around the world, including foundations.(au), to implement them in under resourced primary schools.

with a lot of muscle and excitement, volunteers from Kagunga primary school, foundations.(au)/foundations.(ug) and one very fabulous volunteer from Germany, Lisa Becker, constructed the first learning landscape in Kabale!

since construction Lisa has been back to the school to run a teacher training session on some of the fabulous educational games developed by Project H. the first group of students to play 'match me' and 'king of the tyre' had a blast!

stay tuned for the learning landscape video.

since early 2011 foundations.(au) has been working with Kagunga primary school, a local government school for years primary one to seven. foundations.(au) works in partnership with the local health centre and staff to provide much needed health services to the 600 students and 14 staff. terms 2 and 3 saw foundations.(au) run a dental workshop and clinic for the entire school, malaria and HIV testing days and a mental health outreach.

our school nurse/community health worker, Ronah, has been busy completing the 'school health cards', a program initiated and developed by the World Food Program, the World Health Organization and the Republic of Uganda, however not yet implemented in schools across Kabale. foundations.(au) is the first body to implement these cards in Ugandan schools and is collecting vital health data on the children on Uganda.

earlier in the year we had a request from a very generous Australian who had spent some time with a group of children from Kisoro, Uganda. she was touched by their stories and wanted to provide them with school supplies for 3rd term, 2011. with the help of foundations.(au) on the ground, she was able to do just that, providing 80 children with pens, pencils, books, washing soap and footballs! A big thank you to Sally Ledger and Anna Wallwork who assisted in handing out the supplies and running singing activities on the day!

Emma, the very generous Australian, also makes children's clothes and we are happy to share the link to her facebook page with you all, please check it out! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Maisha-Designs/160282127353900?sk=wall

checking in on Vian.

posted 3 Nov 2011 15:53 by Rosie O'Halloran   [ updated 3 Nov 2011 15:55 ]

remember Vian?! well he was the feature in Operation Smile’s April newsletter! check out the article here since his return from the Operation Smile's mission in Rwanda, teachers at Vian's school have noticed a boost in his confidence both inside and out of the classroom. he is now a much happier young boy. he came to town last term to spend the day playing with the friends he made at our place, and everyone was excited to see his scar healing and his smile getting bigger and bigger!

Rosie O'Halloran checked in on him on her latest trip to Uganda, 'it was wonderful to see Vian and the extraordinary work Operation Smile did earlier this year. Vian has spent most of his childhood being bullied by his peers and
ostracised at school. his difficulty speaking resulted in several challenges in his learning as well as not having a 'voice' to flight for his rights at home and in the classroom. everyone at foundations.(au) is so happy to see the change in Vian and hopes for a brighter future for this remarkable young boy. thank you once again Operation Smile!'
